Our Foundation programme prepares children for a lifetime of musical discovery. Our carefully structured curriculum builds independent, inquisitive musicians, ready to take on the challenges of studying and performing at a higher level.

Jennifer Haworth, Head of Keys Foundation

Our Foundation Programme is carefully developed to cover a wide range of skills. Throughout the 5 phases children will learn:

  • Early basic technique

  • Reading and writing standard rhythm notation

  • Reading and writing standard pitch notation using landmark notes and knowledge of intervals

  • The musical elements of articulation, dynamics, time and tempo

  • Basic harmony and knowledge of chords, including building triads in major and minor keys.

  • Early performance skills.

The group format of foundation lessons is the huge advantage in our curriculum. Children learn and revise specific concepts through fun and engaging activities. Through interaction with peers, they are able to learn from each other, listen and play as an ensemble, and they quickly become comfortable playing in front of others.

I was 3 when I started playing piano  at Keys and I like  the songs and games that Jeni teaches us to help us learn piano. I have learnt a lot. I can play piano all on my own with both hands.

Josh’s piano journey at Keys has been an amazing adventure to watch. In such a short space of time my little boy can read the basics of music and play the piano confidently. This is thanks to Keys' well thought-out teaching initiatives which are engaging for children and help them to connect the dots easily. I’ve never seen such a talented music teacher!
